Local Expert: Desert Bighorn Sheep Management Area on Tucson's Northern Boundary

Pusch Ridge: Mike in Tucson, mortgage lenderPusch Ridge, at the western end of the Santa Catalina Mountains on Tucson's northern boundry, is home to the last of this area's Desert Bighorn Sheep.

The imposing granite escarpment that gives Pusch Ridge its name is extremely rugged.  Its high, sheer rock faces make for good Bighorn habitat,

To see Desert Bighorns up close and personal, you'll have to visit one of my favorite Tucson destinations, the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum in the Tucson Mountains, just west of town.  It's one of the worlds ten best zoos.

Desert Bighorns and Pusch Ridge: Mike in Tucson, mortgage lenderThe conservation status of these desert dwellers surprised me.  In 1960, Arizona was home to approximately 3,000 Bighorns.  In 1993, the last year for which I could find an estimate, the population had grown to 6,000!

Tucson is known for a lot of things in 2008.  The Accenture Match Play Golf Tournament with Tiger Woods and 63 more of the world's best golfers has had the spotlight this spring.  We have world reknowned spas, like Canyon Ranch.  Tombstone, where the OK Corral shootout took place in the days of the Earps, is just down the road.

But Bighorn Sheep?

I didn't know that about the bighorns, either.  Thanks for enlightening us.  It reminds me that in the Florida mountains, just east of Deming, New Mexico, that there are oryx and ibex.

Kent,

I didn't know that.  In fact, I didn't know about the Florida mountains.  (Course then, I didn't know about the Simpson ranch either.  LOL)

Alex,

That's a sad thing.  I was hiking north of Pusch Ridge just this past Thursday.  I'll have to check out hikes in the Silverbell Mountains and Aravaipa Canyon.  Thanks for commenting on my blog.
