HooDoos Guard the Catalina Highway Between Tucson and Summerhaven

HooDoos conversing along the highway to Summerhaven: Mike in Tucson, AZ mortgage lender

~ HooDoos Conversing ~

Outlanders have no idea of the beauty to be found in and around the city of Tucson, Arizona.  National TV is partly to blame.  The weatherman shows a map of the United States, and points to the desert southwest painted red on the map, while Chicago is green.  "Be glad we live in Chicago!  It's 105 in Tucson today!"  Here along the road to Summerhaven, the temperature will be 20 degrees cooler, and when you get to the top, you might as well be in southern Canada!

The Catalina Highway begins on the desert floor, and wends its way 26 miles through some of the most magnificent scenery and geology to be found anywhere in the United States.  It's a great drive for motorcycle enthusiasts.

This pullout in a four mile stretch peopled with 'hoodoos' is one of my favorite.  Don't these two put you in awe?  I imagine them conversing about the human ants running up and down the highway.  They were right there when the dominant society in these parts was Apache.  Pretty cool, I think.

Mike: great picture. I had the pleasure of spending an afternoon on Mt. Lemmon recently. it was beautiful. I hadn't been there since the fire. I had seen it from below while it burned but had no idea how devastating it was. Still an awesome place and an awesome drive. Thanks for sharing!

As in Yellowstone, there's life after the fire...  Thanks for commenting!

Great photo and a smart observation about our tendency to think the snapshot is the same as the real thing. Tucson is a lot more than a temperature map on a weather broadcast.

Mike, Took me a minute to retrieve the term Hoodoo from the back of the brain!  Great shot, I've always loved driving around Arizona when business or vacation has brought me down there.  Bill

Mike, that is a great shot! I love those hoodoo's, now I have to go and Google the origins of the name, LOL.

Teral,

We'll keep the light on for them...

Me too.  Funny that I didn't think of that; I feel a blog coming...

Mike, this is beautiful and yes I find the hoodoos very unique and intriguing! Are there many of them? I had no idea about the temp difference! Stupid ole weather man! Looks like a great place to be!

Back when I was a kidd, they used to have names for some of them.  Names people probably would not recognize... like Punch and Judy...

HI MIKE!  One of my all time favoriate roads to travel!  It's hard to look up all the time at the HooDoos so it's worth a stop just to take it all in!

Mike great photo.  I never knew what a HooDoo was.  Would never have known it if I saw it.

I love HooDoos, my favorites are the whole armies of them, like prehistoric giants frozen in time.

Posted by Marge Piwowarski, Phoenix AZ Horse Property, LLC (Phoenix AZ Horse Property) about 8 years ago

Marge,

The Catalina Highway doesn't have armies of them, but it has many more than my little photo would represent.  Perhaps companies of them...

Bonnie,

Thanks for showing up!  Come back soon.

Gab,

Amen to that!

Michael & Cheron,

It is pretty cool, isn't it?

Doreen,

I remember Punch & Judy, and I'll bet I'm not the only Rainer to do so...

Deb,

Plan a visit one of these days!

I am not sure which is more beautiful, the unusual stone formations or the bright blue sky.....

Hope you had your closing.  I enjoyed lunch so much.  It was super nice to meet you in person.  And your recommendation of Beyond Bread was totally perfect.  I really wish they would franchise.  (or you could just suggest their next location be in Milledgeville, GA)

Hi Mike,

Who do's

And who doesn't?

That is the question they are discussing...

Quite the interesting formation!

Hi Mike, Great photo and an educational piece for me since I never heard of the term hoodoo before.  A great name.  According to Wikipedia these formations can also be called a "fairy chimney", another interesting name.  Thank you.

All the best to you in 2012!

Me again Mike....these hoodoos might be recounting the ditty from The Bachelor and The Bobby-socker...off by the first letter of course.  :)
