~ "Okay.  Now that we've got that settled..." ~

NEVER be without your camera!  You never know what you'll see.  A week ago, I was in Boulder City, NV getting a haircut.  The barber was talking with another customer about the Bighorn sheep that had come down from the ridges of the mountains that overlook Lake Mead to feed on the lush grass near his subdivision.

Hemenway Park: Mike in Tucson, AZ mortgage lenderMy ears perked up.  I'd seen three overpasses on Hwy 93's Arizona side that were constructed solely to let Desert Bighorn sheep cross safely above the highway.

Stopping near each overpass, I tried to catch a glimpse of these magnificent animals.  Not a trace.

I asked the barber where he lived, and whether he thought I could get a photo or two if I drove out there.  He identified a subdivision opposite Hemenway Valley Park, overlooking Lake Mead, and said I could be there in fifteen minutes. He didn't have to tell me twice!

Pulling off the Great Basin Highway, I parked near the ballfields you see in the map opposite.  Below me, grazing calmly, was a band of perhaps twenty animals.

Desert Bighorn sheep aren't usually found in such close proximity to humans.  This group didn't seem disturbed at all by my presence, though. They were more interested in grazing, and the dominant ram made sure that the rest of the males knew who was boss!

Amazing pictures, how very fortunate for you.  I ALWAYS carry a camera, and not my phone camera.  I found this great little Sony that I just love.  Thank you for the great photos

Hi Mike,

What interesting and fun photos. Sounds like they're really acclimated to having humans around.

I ran into a single one of these scrambling down the Bright Angel Trail a few years ago. It was off trail. I was trying to stay on.

Mike - I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of those big horns. That young girl seems way too close to these wild animals.

Thank you!

I've spent many a happy hour watching those sheep!

Lunch in a bag, a cold drink and sheep. After the kids were out of the house Brenda and I often went their with our dinner. Our boat was about 3 miles one way and our home 2 the other way for 12 of our 20 years in Vegas.

You're welcome!  Do you ever get back to Lake Mead?

They weren't agressive at all.

That's an experience!  Did you get a photo?

I spent over an hour, and it was wonderful.  The band of sheep spend the nights in the mountains above the subdivision you see on the map, and come down during the afternoon to graze and water in and near the park.

Me too in re to the camera!  Thanks for being the first to comment.

Bill didn't say that we would spend, time in many of the different coves watchin the speep go up and down the rock,You have to watch very carefully, even looking at then they can vanish. That is why the park is such a good place to watch them.

Hi Mike , Wonderful shots and for sure these Big Horn are stunning. Love these. I took a photo a few years of one here in Palm Desert and I simply can't find it. Guess I will need to repeat the effort. They are certainly beautiful to look at.

HI MIKE!  So you didn't go all the way to NV for a haircut did you?!  And who is the little girl in the photo?

I don't know who the little girl is; I took her picture to illustrate how habituated this band is to humans.  I went to Las Vegas for the International Convention for Send Out Cards.

I hope you find it!

I would love to have spent a day watching these sheep.  Thanks for commenting!
