Choppers over Gates Pass: Mike in Tucson, AZ mortgage lender

~ Heavy Choppers Flying Into the Sunset ~

There's no mistaking the sound of the Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter.  I could hear these two approaching from the east, behind me, as I searched for a place to park my car at Gates Pass.  The sunset was exceptional tonight, and I was late.  Every spot seemed to be taken.  Then one opened up, and I pulled into the space, jumped out with my finger manipulating the zoom as I ran to the top and snapped this photo.  Ten seconds later they were out of sight.

We have choppers fly over quite a bit heading to Camp Penalton.  I would know what they are before I would see them.

Hi Mike , beautiful sunset and the whirlybirds are all over our area so I see them often but generally not over the ocean in a sunset though. Nicely done Mike.

Mike, great photos. What a shock. Great photos from Mike.

Just stay away from the edge of the road at Gates Pass. Always made me nervous.

Some aitcraft like Harley's or Early John Deeres on the ground don't need to be seen to be recongised!

The P-51 Mustaing alought it sounds alot like a Spitfire. A P-47 has it's oun sound, too. The
Bell-47/50 is unique. The B-17 sounds like a Mustang when they start the first engine, then it's just over whelming noise.

One of the strangest is the Goodyear Blimp, engines struggling, but going no-where.

Possibly the easiest planes to know by sound were "The Red Devils" 3 Pitts doing diamond formation snap rolls, Charlie Hillard in the lead had a different engine than the other two, it made for a totally unique sound!

You're going to scare alot of conspiracy devotes with photos of black helicopters over Arizona.

GOOD MORNING MIKE! Don't you always see the greatest things around town -- a sign of someone who always has their eyes and ears open! Hope you are well and that they took care of that graffiti on the sign by your house!

Check out Tucson Mountain Park's entrance next time you are over this way.  The county cleaned up ALL the graffiti!

 I couldn't agree more!

More than one of the sounds you describe is etched in my brain.  Just reading your comment, I can "hear" the engines in my mind.

That's the way I drive to work almost every day, and my favorite way to come home each day.  I take it slow coming down the pass going home.  :)

Lovely sunset and those things are so loud... for some reason for a long period of time they flew over my house almost every day, very low...  the whole house vibrated.

Mike - In the last few years, I've had a lot of these choppers fly over my home, and they do let you know they are coming. The picture of the sky is fantastic.

Mike once again you have posted some fantastic shots.  You probably could make a live at that :)

Forget the helicopters - those are amazing shots of sunset!  We get a "few" helicopters here and for some reason it always freaks me out.  Close enough to a base to kinda expect it but then again, not really.  Hhmmm.....  ;)

I take my son with me when I have business in Surprise or West side just to see military aircraft.

Hi Mike, Why don't you sell your pictures? You know there are websites where yiou can post them to be "rented" to people that want great photos like yours but can't take them themselves.

It's good to see you!  I didn't know about those websites.  I'll give you a call.

I'll bet he loves that!

I'm glad you like 'em!

If I can find out how to monetize 'em, I'll do it.

Thanks, my friend!

Our home shakes when they fly by; I know of what you speak...

Mike, Love both of these photos and I agree that there is no mistaking the sound of those helicopters.
