Mike in Tucson's Saturday Night Post

Saturday Night Sunset: Mike in Tucson, Mortgage Lender

~ Sonoran Desert Sunset ~

It never fails.  The parking lot on the summit of Gates Pass Road is full one-half hour before sunset.  The glow of the setting sun brings a chorus of "Ooohs" and "Aahhs" from the tourists.  Their sunset is the little one you see there on the right.

The sun's glow fades, and the sky turns gray.  People make their way to their cars and head on down the hill, lights on, glad to have experienced a Tucson sunset.

They left the party too early.  Ten minutes after dusk begins to fall, color again begins to flush on the bottoms of the clouds, and within a minute or two, this (the photo above) is what the sky looks like behind them to the west.

I call it the "afterglow."  Many tourists never see it.  Satisfied that they had experienced all there was to see, they're gone.  Anticipating dinner, they head east down the mountain, leaving me to photograph the kind of sunset most people in higher latitudes will never enjoy.

There's a business lesson there, my friends.

Mike, can't decide which one I like better, the sunset or the afterglow!  I wouldn't one to miss either one and am sorry for the folks that did.

Beautiful Mike. Az gets these striking dark oranges and we get the yellows, reds and pinks. Not to mention shooting over the blue of the water with the setting sun. Hope you are doing well Mike!

Hi Mike,

What magnificent photos! It's also nice to hear how others also appreciate it. That reminds me of celebrating the sunsets on Mallory Dock in the Fl. Keys.

I think this is the trick with sunsets.  We have all been guilty of leaving too early.  The best of it often comes at the end.  This one is gorgeous.  Glad you waited and took the picture.

Imagine tourists knowing to go to a certain parking lot to see the sunset. And then they missed the best part.  And after that - there's nothing like a star-filled desert sky. Lovely.

It's so sad that so many have never taken the time to sit on top a hill and watch a sunset! Or seen the hope that is sunrise! Preferably with some one you love.

Great work!

Beautiful pictures, Mike. Isn't that the problem these days, everyone is in a hurry to get to the next thing and never really enjoy what they have at that moment. Not only is it a business lesson; but a lesson in life.

Good deal!  Please let me know when you're coming.

It's beautiful, isn't it?

I like your take on this; we do need to take a litte more time...

Good morning!  Thanks for stopping by to comment.

Thank you!

...and a "good morning" to you, Mr. Holmes!  Love the profile photo.

...and they're not too shabby in New Mexico, either!

That particular parking lot at the summit of Gates Pass draws visitors from around the world.  Maybe even you, one of these days!

It certainly pays to wait another 10 or 15 minutes!

We want to see some of those; see you on your blog.

Mike, how wonderful to have such a beautiful landscape and sunset to enjoy.  I'll have to make the drive, go to San Diego to see Heritage Park that William Johnson wrote about in his featured blog today, and make my way back to Arizona for an inspiring sunset.  Thanks for sharing!

Beautiful....I love sunsets. I'm from California and used to seeing them over the ocean, when I lived in PA for a year there were some wonderful sunsets....with no where to go to see them :)

My husband loves to take pictures of the Arizona sunsets and sun rises. People who have never visited Arizona miss the beauty the state has to offer.  Your pictures add to the attraction that brings the snowbirds year after year.

Hi Mike,

I never heard of the "afterglow".  What a great way to describe it.

Blue Saguaro: Mike in Tucson, Mortgage LenderJuli,

Exit I-10 at Speedway.  Go west.  Speedway becomes Gates Pass Road.

Some of my favorite shots happen just after the sky goes gray. This one on the right is one of those.

Then, all of a sudden, it seems, you get an afterglow like the photo in the post.

Thanks for your encouragement!

One of these days, you're going to leave the Hudson Valley and take a trip to Tucson.  Call me when you do.

I'll mosey on over to your post and look for some of them!

I sure enjoy doing it.

Too many trees in Pennsylvania!  And the latitude is too far north.

Call before you come, and we'll have a mini-AR-meetup!
