Walking The Dog in Longboat Key, Sarasota, Florida

Walking the dog in Longboat Key: Mike in Tucson

~ Walking the dog in Longboat Key, Sarasota, Florida ~

You can't do this in Tucson, Arizona!  I was taking an early morning walk with my three brothers along a bay in Longboat Key, and I saw something none of the four of us had seen in more than 45 years.

People were standing up in tiny watercraft, paddling across the water!

We five boys (we lost one of our gang three years ago) grew up in the rainforest in Suriname, South America.  It wasn't unusual to stand in a canoe.

I'd never seen anyone here in the States do this, not until this early morning's walk.

Here's a photo from my childhood.  Look closely; the Indian standing in front of the canoe has a bow and arrow.  He's fishing.

Standing in a canoe: Suriname, SA circa 1963. Mike in Tucson

When I returned to the United States at age 16, and wanted to stand up and paddle a canoe at camp, the counselors kept yelling for me to sit down.  "You'll capsize the canoe!"

There's a Wednesday morning business lesson here, and you don't have to look too far to find it.

I wish you much success in your real estate endeavors today!

The trick is to keep your balance. Life is a balancing act. Good point...

Looks like a good way to exercise and enjoy the water. Thanks for sharing. Are you sure it was the surfboard and not the pretty girl that caught your eye?

Great picures. I'm not sure how she got TWO dogs on the surfboard, but it is definiltely something you do not see every day!

Lucky dogs....

How interesting that you grew up in South America!  What did your parents do?

Mike, A neat perspective!  Spent many days in a canoe, but my balance is not where i would like it to be...standing means getting wet for me...ha

Mike, I love this and Stand up paddling has become very popular here on Lady Bird Lake in Austin. I just hope people do not start carry Blow dart tubes ;-)

Geoff,

Ain't it?!

Suzanne,

You're welcome!  Thanks for stopping by.

Connie,

I want to try it.  I'm waiting for someone to tell me who sells those things.

Bill,

Thanks, my friend!

Bill,

Terrorists on paddle boards?  :)

John,

You'd be surprised.  You could do it.

Maureen,

Dad was a linguist, and Mom was a nurse.  They were missionaries.

Carol,

I wondered that too.

That was a fabulous group of photos!    I did some paddle boarding in California with my daughter, but not with the two dogs on board.  I'll have to send this pic to my son who has lots of dogs in his dog washing biz in SFO- he'll love it!

Great lesson to be learned here about balancing!  As one who does not like to go "in" the water, I won't be trying this anytime soon!  Looks like fun though!

Hi Mike~  I didn't know you grew up in South America!  Interesting photos for sure.  I would never be able to balance like that, especially not with my two wild and crazy dogs on board!

Was not the picture I expected to see.  Very creative title and interesting personal historical perspective.  Liked the business lesson comment - very good.

that is so cool, how does she get the dogs to stay on that? My wouldn't go for it, they be jumping off and knocking me over. I always wanted to learn how to do that though,

I can't imagine how they got themselves standing on the boards must less the dogs.

Mike - Longboat Key is a very nice place to be for sure....hope you are enjoying your time in Florida :)  I think I could stand up on a surfboard like the one in the picture in calm water but with my dog, I don't think my dog would go near it :)

It sure was fun having you guys here for the Suriname Reunion - the girl, walking/boarding on water was sure a plus - wish that you could have stayed longer  - this place is incredible - just got back from having Martinis at Hyde Park with my brother and his wife - let's do it again soon.  Kathie

Mike - Longboat Key is about an hour's drive south of Clearwater, just across the Skyway Bridge. It is a little less time late at night or in the middle of the day, when the traffic is not so bad.

Mike - i would LOVE to do that with my golden retriever.  I think he might jump in and send me overboard though!

Nice Photos Mike. Paddle boarding is the fastest growing water sport in the world. Its fun, easy to learn and a great way to get in shape. It's also an incredible new industry with huge business possibilities. The demographics are from 7 to 65 years old and predominantly woman.  Some experts would suggest that it will be bigger than surfing, skiing and snowboarding.

Those are only a few reasons for leaving my 20 year Real Estate Career. :)

Mike - I've heard a lot about paddle boarding from my California contacts, and would like to try this one day. May be a while before I invite my dog on board, though! Way to tie the message in about balancing and upping the ante with a couple of canine additions.

Mike,

What a fun way to travel for a dog or a person. I can see my Bern enjoying that.  He likes to ride on anything that is floating on water.  Me too.  Glad you had your camera, as usual, on your walk.
