Mountain Lion's View From a Cave 300' Above The Valley

Cow on the valley floor: Mike in Tucson

Mountain Lion: Mike in Tucson

That's a ranch house you see on the valley floor below.  Cattle graze down there, unaware of the danger above.  People go about their daily work, oblivious to North America's largest cat.  There are more than 40 names in English for this cat.  Cougar, Puma, Painter, Mountain Lion...

A big male like this one can weigh 200 lbs, and stand 2.5' high at the shoulder.  It's likely that he's bigger than you.

Its scream, reverbrating across the valley in the night air, will send a chill down the spine of the most seasoned outdoorsman.

I was hiking in the Sierrita Mountains southwest of Tucson, scaling a cliff face, when I found the opening you see in the photo below.  Looking down, I could see light, and I followed it to this beautiful opening framing the valley floor 300' below.  It's not as big as it seems; I took the photo laying on my back with the camera on my chest, and had some difficulty getting my big feet out of the photo.  :)  Once through the opening, I could stand on the ledge beyond, where you see the saguaro standing guard.

The closest most of us come to the natural world and its inhabitants is the Discovery Channel.  Come visit Tucson!  With four major mountain ranges, and thousands of miles of hiking trails, you'll find more adventure in a week than many folks experience in a lifetime.

Oh, and my photo of that Mountain Lion?  I took that at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, just down the road from my home in the little community of Tucson Estates II.  It's one of the world's 10 best zoos!  Their motto is "Close to home; far from ordinary!"  Come to think of it, that's what my Darlin' says about me!

Beautiful pictures, Mike. And that was very brave of you...entering that cave! Thanks for sharing.

I made a lot of noise before I did that, and poked around with my hiking stick!  I didn't want to surprise anything.  LOL

Check out the large 2 story home at the bottom on the photo.  This is the main house for the ranch.

Mike those are great pics and a great story. I wouldn't venture into the cave, even after making noise.

Very Nice Mike!    Great shots, and I would be completely frightened seeing one of these, or hearing them!

Great photos, Mike (even yours!) but I am afraid that the chances of that cat being home would keep me away.

Hi Mike, Wonderful! Loved the story and the photos. And the pitch to visit Tucson could be a great Tourism Ad. What I do know is that from all the places you have captured on photo files and written about, I certainly could never be disappointed. Great stuff Mike ! ( I call all my best possessions, "stuff")

Great Shots!   I sure wish I could get there and see your landscape, mountains, and kitties.   I love all the big cats.  Here we have Florida Panthers, but I haven't seen on in years.

Interesting story about what you went through to get the perfect shot. I love it when photographers make the effort to show us new perspectives.

Mike, next time I come down there, I want you to take me to some of these great places you're finding.  What a great way to spend your free time - enjoying all that nature has to offer.

Thank you for sharing - both the photos and the information.  And, all the green color right now in the first photo is making me jealous - you guys "hogged" all the monsoon rains, I just know it, LOL.

I totally thought that the big cat was out in the desert wild.....great photos.  I once had one walk in front of me across my driveway, maybe 200 feet away.  Never before or since have I seen such big feet on an animal....it was really close one of those things that you never forget.

You're very kind with your comments.  I love bushwhacking, going where there are no trails, and taking photos of the things I find.  Sharing on Active Rain with this great group of people is icing on the cake!
