Arizona? Think Again! This Is California!

Mike in Tucson: Photographing the Fence

Arizona?  Think again!  This is California.  And that's California's fence.

Michael & Ginny in Carlsbad, CAWe Tucsonans (my Darlin and I) spent some hard-earned money in California last weekend.

Boycotting Arizona

We didn't boycott the boycotters.

This fence is the border between Mexico and California.  I didn't see any Californians protesting their fence.  I imagine they built it because California didn't want an open border.

We were stopped for no reason when we crossed the border from Arizona to California.  Armed men looked in our car (the one with the Arizona license plate.)

We had to stop not once, not twice, but THREE times to be checked on the way in!

Fences

I've heard that fences make for good neighbors.  Have you heard that?

Maybe the Californians boycotting Arizona ought to look in their own back yard first.  I'm just sayin...

Hey Mike,

Wow, I had no idea (and I'm in CA) this fence existed. I'm very curious where you were when you encountered those fences?

Just so you know, not all Californians are boycotting, NOT IN THE LEAST. Some of us, and me included right at the top are looking for ways to spend a few bucks in your beautiful state of AZ. To add to that, I made a contribution to send a CA h.s. band to AZ when the school decided it was too expensive. One of our local radio stations picked up on it and raised $50,000 (from listeners) to send them anyway. It was successful, they collected the funds prior to the deadline.

So....please don't think everyone in CA is in the land of "fruits and nuts" we've got plenty, but don't count the rest of us out. SO MANY here support your/our cause!

Good post John. I am in support of AZ and am furious that the justice department is spending my tax dollars to sue the state. Thanks for posting.

Dan,

That would be "Mike."  LOL  Thanks for your comment.

Lynda,

This fence runs for miles, but comes closest to Interstate 8 at the Imperial Sand Dunes near Yuma.  I do know that not all Californians support the boycott, but when the Los Angeles City Council went on record as doing so, I certainly took exception.  Thanks so much for your kind comment.

Enjoy your vacation in California.  Call if you need a reference when you leave.  You do know you will need a reference?

MSNBC poll says that 96% of the people taking the poll support Arizona and I am one of them.

Well, you and Darlin do look suspicious.  I can see why they would want to search you.  (Really, I cannot imagine being pulled over by armed police and have my car searched....crazy, like living in a totalitarian society!  Oh, that's right, we do.)

Mike - I never heard of it!   That's absolutely crazy!!!!     I am speaking with my daughter who's in LA, and we'll see what she says....    I am sure most of the Califirnians don't know about this!

Dorie,

The only reason for the checkpoints is the open border on the Arizona side.  California doesn't want illegal entrants.  We didn't have this in NJ when crossing the Delaware River into Pennsylvania.  LOL

Dagny,

I'm in agreement with having closed borders, and have no problem with the fence.  California law on Borders isn't so different than Arizona law.

Suzanne,

EVERY CAR entering California from Arizona must divert off the interstate and stop at a checkpoint.  The interstate is blocked off, and the first checkpoint is a permanent one.  The others are set up temporarily, but again, everyone gets stopped.

Teral,

I might have guessed as much...  LOL

Dan,

The Arizona side of the state border had checkpoints too.  I'll call for a reference.  Thanks!

Mike - I find that amazing! Are they (California) going to leave the US next and set up their own country????? I understand their (California's) fence to another country, but armed men checking cars from one US state to another???? Is that even legal??????

Mike,

This is more like those that live in GLASS HOUSES(californians) throwing ROCKS.  Or is it don't do as I do do as I say?

Dan haven't those checkpoints been there for years?  Isn't that to do with truckers, fruit diseases or something like that?  I don't think it has to do with this whole other issue looming towards us - naaaa.  I don't think so.

Hey glad to hear you and your darlin had a great time at the beach.  I'm next!

Hi Anna, yes the check posts have been there many years, and it has everything to do with fruit diseases.  Both into and out of California.  The Border Patrol also sets up check points at times however.  And Federal agents will ask for ID, I always have my passport with me.

Interesting how they can have a fence, but if we want one here in AZ we are such terrible people.

Traveling between AZ and CA since the early 70's, don't remember armed fruit checkers.  Things have changed.
