Sunday, June 27, 2010 ~ Family on the east coast called to say how bad they felt for us here in Tucson. The National Weather Service showed that the high today was 106 degrees! Just imagine how hot that is!
Actually, this afternoon found us driving up the Catalina Highway into the Santa Catalina Mountains. Destination? Mt. Lemmon ~ just 20-some miles away. We had plans for a picnic supper high in the Sky Island that borders us to the north of town.
The temperature at our picnic table was a cool 68 degrees at elevation 8,300. Tucson was far below us. In the car on the way home, my Darlin' put the heat on just a little to take off the chill.

Wow what an amazing photo. I have never been there but I guess that would be true. Just head for the mountains and the temps drop. Sounds like you had the perfect day.
As we in Az like to say "It's a dry heat"
I love it here! Bring on the sun. Just so long as we get our required summer and winter rains! Gorgeous photo - everything looks cool and beckoning.
It's 10:30pm and 102 degrees in Surprise. BUT...it is a dry heat and I love it!
Thank you for allowing us to use your pictures.
Nice vista Mike. It was 95 here yesterday - hot and muggy...
Yes, I remember the days when we just ran up the mountain to cool off. It was wonderful!! It was roll down the windows time!! Beautiful shot!
Sounds like you had a nice day....and it's great to have the option of just getting to the elevation to cool off. Wish we had a way to "turn off" the humidity.
Very nice from you about your pics and a great way to spread the beauty of your state. . .
Mike,
I love it!
When I couldn't be immersed is a lonesome cove at Lake Mead our second choice was mountains.
Bill
(It is in deed a small world.)
Hi Mike, what a spectacular photo. I live in St. George Utah and love the dry heat we have here. We drive up to Pine Valley which is about 45 minutes north of here to cool off.
WOw and I thought New York was bad at 92 degrees.. I just love your photos...
Well, you know I don't have any vistas in Ocala but there are horses everywhere so I have no complaints. Enjoyed the photo!
Mike, that is quite a contrast! Beautiful photo!
Boy, talk about 2 extremes and it isn't even CHICAGO! I only thought that wacky weather happened here!
Move to L.A. We are freezing here in the low 70s and haven't seen the sun in I don't know how long. This is a long June gloom. I think I'd like the heat right now, but not sure about 106.
We've been in a real heat wave too. Wed, through Sunday, it reached 95-100 every day. Cooler today in the low 90s.
From a 106 degree to a very nice 68 all within a short drive. Now that is saying a lot.
Don,
I forgot to say that there's a ski lift on top! It's the southerly most ski area in North America.
Lenn,
Our humidity on the valley floor was a stunning 45%. People complain around here when it gets that humid.
Jane,
Like they say, it's a dry heat.
Lyn,
The town on top is called Summer Haven. There's a reason...
Tony,
Thanks!!
Susie,
Good luck with the move!
Donna,
Thanks for saying so.
Erika,
I think I could like it where you live.
Bill,
Ginny and I will have to check out Lake Mead one of these days.
Fernando,
Thanks, my friend!
Don,
Consider a trip to Tucson!
Doreen,
You know all about it! The signs are new, though...
Michael,
I'll bet you enjoyed the AC!
Leolinda,
You're welcome! (And you're the very first person to mention it.)
Cara,
I had some rain on the windshield this afternoon when driving home.
Wade,
Yes it is!
Sheryl,
Thanks for being the first to comment!
Mike in Tucson
Mike ... Thanks for this great local post and photo image about your travel to picnic at Santa Catalina Mountains near Tucson. I have visted at Tucson a number of times and have never been to those beautiful mountains. Best to you.
Mike - A cool front came in last night, and we a re getting maorning lows in the 60's and highs in the 80's with low humidity. I like it.
OK, after the last few days, I say it's time for someone to feel sorry for us! My car said it was 115!
The Arizona climate is truly a miracle... unless, of course, you live in the Phoenix area!
Hope your friends who were at FMC are ok.
You guys have that DRY heat - I feel sorry for those living in DC and NYC right now!!! I can't imagine what they are going through - especially those that are older and have no air conditioning!
