John Wayne and Golden Gate

I love John Wayne westerns!  If the movie has a saguaro cactus in it, you can bet the movie was shot at Old Tucson Studios.

Now here's the thing to look for--somewhere in the movie, the camera will pan from the action to the background, and there it is!  Golden Gate Mountain.

Even long time Tucsonans have no idea that the movie studio, which is still active, sits at the foot of a mountain named Golden Gate.

Take a ride on Speedway west toward the Tucson Mountains.  It will be good for your soul.  As you leave the city, the road rises and winds through a magnificent forest of giant saguaro cacti.  You'll enter Tucson Mountain Park, cross over Gates Pass, and there it is!  Check it out--it's particularly beautiful at sunset in the monsoon season.

Why do I love John Wayne movies so much?  My Grandpa was a makeup artist in the early days.  John Wayne used to come to their flat in New York City.  But that's another post for another day.  Check out www.GoldenGateTucson.com

Fascinating fact!  The next time I see an old John Wayne movie, I'll look for that.

McLintock, shot in 1963, would be a good one to start with. And it's a love story.

Mike, I just wanted to see when you began on AR. I also read the one about the wildlife trail. You have a real flair for this thing (blogging).

My father in-law is a huge John Wayne fan. I am sure that he would like to be able to say that John Wayne shot a movie in our area.

So I checked yours out as well.  Your flair for blogging was evident with this very first post. Mine is still in development!

Mike - Following your lead, I thought I'd come read your first post, too. My dearest friend, maid of honor in my wedding, has a long standing family relationship with John Wayne and especially, his son Michael. Her dad was one of John Wayne's stunt doubles, working in several of his movies. As Fran states  above, your early blogs exhibit a natural talent for blogging.

Great post but you have really tweaked my interest about your next John Wayne post! Thanks and I look forward to it soon!

I had to come see your first AR post after you commented on John N's first post!

A hyper local intro that features John Wayne.  Makes me wonder did you write about your grandfather and John Wayne...
