Warmth And Beauty In The Southwest: Tucson, Arizona In January

Minimalist cactus landscape in Tucson, AZ

While most of the nation was enveloped in record cold this January 8th, Tucson enjoyed a high of 70 degrees, and I took this photo at four in the afternoon near my Starbucks hangout at Country Club and Speedway.

Sunset fell as I was ascending "A" Mountain to capture the westerly view seen below, looking toward Cat Mountain in the Tucson Mountains.  The time difference between the two photos is less than two hours.

Sunset over the Tucson Mountains west of town

The light here in Tucson is different somehow from what I've experienced elsewhere in the United States, and the beauty of the landscape (whether in daylight or at nightfall) never fails to thrill me.

You know you want to come visit Tucson!  Okay, here's one more photo from the evening...

Here I am in less-than-balmy North Carolina, wondering what 50 would feel like...

And I have to hear about "70."  I appreciate you not tossing in a "neener neener," Mike.

Oh...  Great photos, as always.

How long does it take to drive from Cary to the airport in Charlotte?

Great pics Mike, and I love the captions!  Now that's what I call marketing!

I enjoy fishing on the Willamette for steelhead in the winter, but that's about the limit.  Then it's back home to the warmth and the sun.  Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Mike, not to shabby here in El Paso, a cool 39 degrees for a high. Great photos, I like the last photo of the plane amidst the orange clouds.

What a pleasure to see you on my blog!  We'll be driving through your fair city around the first of April on the way to the ranch in Caddo, OK.  Let's plan to break bread together!

How beautiful! I just posted about the cold... your pictures are WAY more inviting! Breathtaking!

That first photo could pass for a blizzard, somewhat.   ;-)  I like the rocks in the holes and the way you added your initials on the ground.

Goodness.  That sky appears to be on fire.  We just don't get that effect in the east.

Also, our flora require a modicum of soil, water and nutrient.  It appears that the cacti would grow in thin air.

Amazing photos as usual.

Mike, nice photos. I will be in Vegas in about a week. Hopefully it will be warmer than it is here...

Mike, Great pictures. My parents are coming from Illinois today to stay a couple weeks and enjoy our weather. It couldn't be more perfect.

It's here to be enjoyed!  Come on out for a visit.

Wonderful!  Enjoy the time.

You're going to love it!  Check in with Vegas Bob for an AR meetup.

Good morning!  If you look closely, you'll see that one of the cactus arms fell, and there's a second plant growing from where it touches the sand.  Thanks for the encouragement!

I had a good time with the initials.  It's actually a font with the black background that mimics the holes above.  It's part of Picasa by Google.

I'll be over to check out your post.  Come visit!

Your photos are always though provoking!

Brenda and I use to live at Lake Tahoe you couldn't cut the trees blocking you windows there ether.

I love the sunset, but the second one reminds me of an episode of the "Twilight Zone!"

Thanks! It's going to be another, admittly cold, good day.

You're welcome!  I hadn't thought of Twilight Zone for a long time; it was a favorite when I was a grade schooler.

Mike - as Kathy said keep them comming. She has a growing collection of her own, some of our favourites are from years ago on 35mm slides (slides, who even remembers them)

Mike, outstanding photos!  I love the sunset photos and the one with the jet in the sunset!  Gorgeous!

Tony & Darcy,

Thanks!  While I was photographing, jets were on final to Tucson International Airport at intervals of five minutes or so.  I was fortunate to capture this one.

Slides make exceptional digital photographs!  Sounds like a project...

Come on down!

You bet!  I'll email you.

You won't be disappointed!

It's good to see you!  Keep warm!
