New Year's Day 2010 ~ Last night marked the last "Blue Moon" on New Year's Eve for the next nineteen years. I had planned to capture it before turning in, but the best laid plans...
This morning I woke at 6:45, grabbed the camera, and set off to capture that same Blue Moon before it disappeared over the western horizon. As dawn broke, I was at the edge of Saguaro National Park and took this shot to share with you on the first day of the New Year.
Thanks for stopping by my blog; I expect that this will be a great year for your business and for mine. Come back often; I'll be here!
EDIT: Send me a snail mail address through Active Rain, and I'll be sure to mail you a postcard made from this photo. (It's Bruce Brockmeier's fault...)

Mike, That is obsolutely gorgouse. It looks like a painting.
Great way to start 2010, Mike! I couldn't get a good sunrise shot this morning, but still have some blue moon over the Strip photos to look through. Your pics are a great motivator for me to keep my camera ready. Happy New Year!
Hot dog. Put something up. We'll love to see them.
I might do this image. I love it.

I looked everywhere last night for the bluemoon. I couldn't find it anywhere! That is an awesome picture!
Last night I saw the beautiful Blue Moon! And wanted to take a photo too! Glad you did! Instead, I enjoyed with my twins..couldn't get the camera in time. Thanks for the photo. Happy New year!
Mike,
Great picture, it was a lovely moon, perhaps it is signaling a great year ahead for all of us...All the best to you in 2010!
Lovely image. I had the same idea but, alas, the cloud cover was too thick. Nineteen years? I think I'll still be at it then and I'll get that shot from the Valley of the Moon...to share with you.
Blue or made out of Cheese it still looks great. Have a wonderful 2010.
The night before my wife and I got a beautiful bright orange moonset over the Pacific Ocean. It happens a few times a year just as the sun is rising and the moon is setting. Sometimes it's hard to discern which one's the moon and which ones the sun. I'm only sorry I didn't get a pic of it. Good going. Next time I'll be more on the ball.
Love this picture.....it's really nice. Thanks for getting it out to us today.
Happy New Year from Seacoast NH
Patricia
What a great photo! Love it! Kathy

Mike:
What a great picture. I love the desert at night. I also love the term "Once in a blue moon."
I just returned from my first trip to Phoenix. I was amazed at the beauty of the desert! Great picture!
Mike - an inspiring photo. I wish you a happy NEW YEAR too!
I had my camera in the car and didn't even think of snapping any shots last night over the lake when I was out on the deck. Oh well, I'll just have to enjoy your capture of the New Year's Eve Blue Moon... which as usual for your work is just beautiful.
Great shot Mike. Happy New Year. I'll be around tool
Great shot! We were completely overcast last night in Seattle, so no way to see it. Thanks for sharing!
i hope it is a great year for picture taking, also!

Nice image, I tried to take it over the cimarron mountains but the camera had a dead battery. Bummer
Great picture. It turned out much better than mine as mine last night look like an alien ship took over the moon.
Donna,
I still want to see it on your blog! Happy New Year!
Nick,
Gotta keep those batteries charged! I tried to get a shot with my Blackberry, and that had a dead battery... Too funny.

The moon between the cacti is just perfect. I was sleeping in and miss the entire evening. Here's wishing you continued prosperity and success in the New Year.
Beautiful photograph. Thank you for sharing it with us.
I got to see the blue moon last night but honestly did pay that much attention. I was too busy shooting off fireworks and then using the mortar bases for target practice. LOL. Happy New Year!
TNT
Great shot... Enjoy that desert time.
Mike - This is a terrific shot. I was surprised to see the full moon last night, then even more surprised to hear that it was a blue moon. :)
It is a beautiful picture, Mike...but can anyone explain what a "blue moon" is? It's one of those phrases that I've heard all my life, but never bothered to find out exactly what it refers to or what it means...
Agreed, 2010 is going to be a great year! I missed the blue moon because I turned in early. Thanks for posting the photo.
Mike awesome shot, you have a way of choosing great subjects.
Have a great year.
This has to be one of your best photos -- (not that any are bad) -- happy new year!

Mike,
Great color in this shot. Like the way the moon is framed. Just great composition. :)
Steve
Happy New Year! What a lovely photo, better, I'm sure, than it would have been last night.
I'll look foward to receiving my postcard.

Awesome up close photo!!
HAPPY NEW YEAR !!! HAPPY 2010 !! Wishing You Health, Happiness, a little extra money in your pocket & a Happy New Year!

Thanks,

Mike--It was a little colder viewing that blue moon from where I stood but just as beautiful! Have a great 2010!
5 star photo my friend! Happy New Year! :-)
Mike, I had no idea I was admiring a blue moon when my husband and I were driving to our Sun City West New Years eve party. It was beautiful!
Mike - A great photo of the blue moon. In Toronto, I saw a hazy blurry blue moon around 11 pm on New Year's Eve. I was lucky to see it given all the rain we had that day.
Well, if you'll be here, then I'll be by to check up on you and see what you're doing!
Great shot. News media around here were all over it. Wasn't sure till then what a blue moon phrase meant
Have a great day
Tony
You are sure to delight with your stellar photography skills! Happy New Year Mike.
Judy,
Thanks for the encouragement! You, too!

It's sure good to see you; it's been way too long since I visited your blog. See you soon.

The world is a thing of beauty when we have eyes for it; Happy New Year!
Tom,
You're doing your part already. Thanks for commenting!
Christine,
I'm looking forward to sending it; thanks for emailing an address.
Steve,
I picked thorns out of the back of my sweatshirt after I took this shot. Grandma used to say she had eyes in the back of her head. Wish I did! LOL

Mike:
I have noticed the beauty of the moon for last couple of days and had read about the "blue moon" phenomenon. But, your photo of it in the desert setting is particularly intense and beautiful.
What a winner! And your photo is fabulous too, Mike!
Thanks for sharing your AZ Blue Moon. Its a great photo. While walking my dog this week, our Georiga Blue Moon has been just as exciting to see and watch.
Happy New Year!
Great shot! It reminded me of a Bud Light commercial with either the sun or the moon between two bottles of beer. I'll take your picture any day. Happy New Year!
Beautiful Shot!
We enjoyed the view of the Blue Moon on our way to a party.
Too bad - no camera. Thanks for sharing your photo with us.
Mike, that is a fantastic shot! Thanks for sharing it with us!

Another great picture and another reason that I should never leave home without my camera.
Fabulous, the beauty of the desert and you captured it so perfectly.
Arizona is SOO God's country! :)
Mike, it's been said tens of times, but I just had to compliment you on a stellar moon shot!
Mike, is this HD? It almost looks 3D.
Mike - I'm glad you captured the photo of the rare Blue Moon! I didn't get it captured! As always your photos taken with a desert tapestry are amazing!
Absolutely wonderful shot, Mike! I had forgotten how beautiful the desert can be!
Debi
Debi,
There's beauty everywhere when we stop to look. Thanks for your email!
Myrl,
You're so kind. Thanks!
Sharon,
It's not HD. I haven't mastered that yet, as I don't have a very good tripod.

OK, Mike, then a double WOW for the skill and lighting in that shot. Gallery quality.
Pretty darn cool! You have my address already... I didn't know it would be so long before the next one. I missed it. wah!
Mike - Another fantastic picture of the desert sky. You may be able to sell some of your pictures for a small sideline business.
Beautiful shot. Thanks for sharing. I meant to take one in New York but it was so cold that night, I didn't feel like going out.

I've been in New York in the winter, and I understand! Happy New Year.
