Just Another Tasty Morsel

Pink cirrus cactus blooming

New cactus buds on our pink cirrusPhotography allows the viewer to decend to a level of detail that's difficult to share in any other way.  Walking through our neighborhood, you might look over at this cactus from twenty or thirty feet and perhaps comment on the color of the flower.

Close up, the magnificent structure of the petals, the stamens and the pistil becomes evident.

Evidently not everyone is as impressed as I was.

A night visitor (javelina or mule deer) chowed down on this delectable morsel (above,) undoing all the reproductive work of my cactus, its flower and our honeybees.

The cactus will have the last word, though.  See there on the right?  It's working to right the wrong it suffered.

I love living in Tucson, Arizona!  You will too.  Come on down for a visit anytime.

Green-O-lina,

What are you doing up at 5:00 a.m. on a Saturday, JaneAnne?  (Of course, I just woke up, and it's 3:25 a.m. here.  LOL) I haven't seen you for awhile; welcome back!

Virginia,

Thanks; they sure are.  And for a place that can be very stark sometimes, they provide a wonderful contrast here in the Sonoran desert.

Leolinda,

We don't mind, though, at least not a whole lot.  This is a wonderful place to live, and we're all blessed to be here.

Sally,

Thanks for being the first to comment.  You're surrounded with beauty in Hawaii, too.  I have yet to visit your beautiful island.

You are such a tease!!!  I am a huge fan of flowers and sunsets and with each post you only serve to force me to tell hubby we're going to Tuscon on our next vacation!  LOL  But he doesn't mind ... he likes to travel.

Thanks for sharing the elegant and beautiful specimen.  It's amazing!

Ann,

Fantastic!  We just received our July 2009 issue of Arizona Highways, and Flagstaff is featured throughout the magazine!  There's some very interesting stuff.

Matt,

Thanks for stopping by to comment!  My darlin' loves that closeup shot of the flower too.

Marchel,

Isn't it?!  We love the desert southwest!

Don,

The desert animals love to eat most anything that doesn't have stickers.  They avoid the spines, but enjoy the flowers and the fruit of the cactus.

Carol,

I'm going to be disappointed if you don't follow through!  So come on down!

Bill,

I'm glad you didn't miss it!  (I owe you a phone call to finish up where we left off.)

Larry,

I hope you planted more tomatoes!

Wow I didn't realize cactus could produce such beautiful flowers!  That top shot is awesome!  What's the diameter on a flower like that?

Chanda panda,

It's as big as your hand with your fingers outstretched!

Myrl,

Yes it is!  And it comes in white, yellow, and deep red as well!

Wow!  Once again you have captured a beautiful moment in time.  (literally, I guess, since it was eaten)

Posted by Doreen McPherson, Phoenix Arizona Real Estate ~ (Homesmart ~ Scottsdale ~ Tempe) about 11 years ago

Was this on manual or auto focus?  Does your camera have a macro setting?  Did you use a tripod?  Flash?  What time of day?  Don't ask, these questions just popped into my head.

Posted by Doreen McPherson, Phoenix Arizona Real Estate ~ (Homesmart ~ Scottsdale ~ Tempe) about 11 years ago

Doreen,

Auto focus.  Macro setting.  No tripod.  No flash.  Early evening.  And it was a (brief) moment in time.

Mike - You do such beautiful work!  How do you keep a record of all your blogs?  There has to be a book or a series of magazine articles there that you can capitalize on.

JD,

Guess I need an agent...  Look on the right hand side of this page, and you'll see the archives by month and year.  I sure enjoy doing it.
