Out of the Active Rain Loop: Working Cattle in Caddo, OK

Sunset at GlenMar Ranch in Caddo, OK

The herd comes a-running when they think they're going to get fed! This was our sunset this evening.  The location is GlenMar Ranch in Caddo, OK.

My Darlin' and I come out here every April, and have been doing so since 1996.  Working cows is so unlike everything I do the rest of the year that it's a vacation to work the spring roundup.

It used to take us more than a week of hard work--my friend Dick Carson and I--to get everything done.  Now we hope to be done in two or three long days.  Shots, medical attention, fly tags, ear tags, banding the bull calves to make little steers out of them....

You have a GREAT week, and thanks for stopping by to comment!

Oh, I'm jealous again! Beautiful photos too... but I wish I was working cattle... with Cowboys! I actually took pictures of some beef cattle this weekend you'll get a kick out of when I post them. In the meantime, the alpaca are cute too. Great to see you. I need to go to be as I get up in 2 hours!!

You keep out doing yourself!

I got your card today, thank you, I love it!

Watch where you stand when Dick is banding, we wouldn't want any mistakes.

I'm laughing out loud.

Working "COWS"?

I can picture you sitting on a stool with a tin pail in your hand "working a cow".

Mike - I am SO jealous!  I miss doing the roundups.  But when I did them they were on my own farm.  So it really was work for me. LOL

We never banded the young guys - we just snipped and pasted them.  Was over a lot quicker, they got their attitudes adjusted instantly, and everyone was happy.  That is ... until ... it was time to do laundry.  I always had to hose off my clothes in the barn before I could take them to the washer.

Hope you and your darlin' have a great time!  Beware of side-stepping cows!  :)

So, Mike,

Enquiring minds want to know ... Do you carry your camera in your pocket?  Wear it on a neckstrap?  Have it tied to the saddle?  I would suppose roundup time could be pretty hazardous to a little camera .....:-)

(Great photos, thank you.)

Beautiful sunset, Mike.

That reminds me of the movie, "City Slickers" except that I get the distinct impression you've "been there - done that".

Have fun, Cowboy!

Gab,

Thanks for commenting!

Karen,

It's definitely not the desert.  It's beautiful, though, and especially this time of year.

Mike,

This is the 14th year in a row working this herd.  Everyone thinks of City Slickers, though.

Cheryl,

I strap it to my overalls.  My friends have WiFi now, so I'm blogging unexpectedly (and happily.)  I did lose a camera in a pasture a few years ago.  Found it a year later, none the worse for wear.

Carol,

I'm careful about those hooves!  The girls never get dirty; they leave the cow manure to us.  Dick got hit in the face with a crappy tail this morning first thing.  "Oklahoma floss" was what he said as he wiped his face.  LOL

Laura,

No elk in Oklahoma that I know of.  We did see whitetail deer today, and wild turkeys.

Lenn,

When I was a kid between high school and college, I worked on a dairy farm (one mile square) owned by Happy Rockefeller in upstate New York.  When my friend Dick retired from the USAF and decided to do this for a living, I took a vacation in 1996 and helped him work his herd in the spring.  I've done it every year since.

Michael,

It was pretty last night!  Thanks for commenting.

Sally,

No whips.  Just sorting sticks.  No horses, either.  4 Wheelers!

Bill,

I'm crossing my legs.  That's pretty funny!

Susie,

I'll be over to your blog to see the photos.  Thanks for commenting.

Marchel,

Thanks for being the first to comment; I'm looking forward to the week, like I do every year.

Mike...  How fun!  I've always wanted to go to one of those Ranches and work for a week.  My time is coming!

Beautiful sunset!

Cheron,

It's not a dude ranch; it's a working ranch for four generations, owned by the same family.  We're just lucky enough to be friends with the owners.

Matt,

Not a chance, I think.  We love Tucson/

Ohh, I like the reblog idea to look at the pictures!!

And I think there are some kickers in the room, too.  :)

I'm impressed!  That's a lot of wrangling to get done in a few days.  Very nice pictures too, especially the little bull/steer in the lush grass.
